![]() ![]() Tutorials will offer you opportunity to clarify lecture content, further develop tools for critical analysis and seek clarification about assignments. Your TA is responsible for grading your assignments, and will be an incomparable resource for you throughout the semester. Tutorial Objectives Tutorials provide essential context and additional content that will supplement lecture material, and tutorial attendance and participation accounts for a significant portion of your grade. ![]() It is the responsibility of each student in this course to take care of themselves and research the materials in the syllabus to ensure that they will be able to view the material for that week. We will be watching sexually explicit materials featuring all sorts of bodies, material that may be offensive, and reading texts that some may find uncomfortable. A note on content warnings: This course will be screening content that might be difficult for some students. The hope is that by lingering on each theme for longer than a single week we will be able to engage more thoughtfully on each of these subjects and open up opportunities for more in-depth consideration and discussion. While each week will have its own required readings, all of the readings within the theme should resonate with each other as a whole (and there will be resonances across the course, of course). Instead of suggesting a chronological survey of sex in the cinema, or attempting to catalogue each and every sex movement or sexual or gender identity formation, this course tackles this prickly, amorphous subject matter through four interlocking themes: censorship, pornography, HIV/AIDS, and sex in public. This course will explore how sex interacts with and tells us about the law, sexuality, gender identity, race, technology, celebrity, ordinariness, disease, labour, publics and counterpublics. This course will examine the strategies for depicting or for concealing sex on screen, and asks what sex does and what sex says about broader society, about a certain time, about certain bodies, and more. Mediated representations of sex have been the subject of furious debate, criminal court proceedings, sexual education, self-discovery, erotic fantasy and much more. “Sex” is a powerful set of discourses which has myriad material affects on our lives.
